Women’s shelters are also child protection shelters.
Children always suffer from violence in the family, whether they experience it themselves or witness it.
  • In the women’s shelter, children can feel safe and secure.
  • Every child has their own contact person.

There are various activities for the children.

Our Organization

The organization Frauenhaus und Beratung e.V. has existed since 1976. We support women and children seeking protection from violence.
We operate two women’s shelters and a counseling center.

We are committed to fighting male violence and advocating for women’s rights.

  • We stand by women and children.
  • We aim to eliminate male violence.
  • We fight for equal treatment of all people, regardless of their skin color, gender, financial status, sexual orientation, or disabilities.

About Violence

One in three women in Germany experiences violence.

For example:
  • From their partner or ex-partner
  • From family members, relatives, or others

Violence against women is widespread.
Domestic violence is particularly severe.
Most perpetrators are men.
A violent man wants to control the woman.
Often, the violence becomes worse over time.
Most men blame the woman for the violence.

But violence is always wrong!

What Is Violence?

There are many forms of male violence:

  • Physical violence
  • Psychological violence: For example, threats, insults, or controlling behavior
  • Sexualized violence: For example, unwanted touching, inappropriate comments, or rape
  • Social violence:
    • Prohibiting contact with friends or family
    • Locking someone up
    • Taking money away
    • Human trafficking
    • Forced marriage
  • Digital violence: For example, sending unwanted images or videos
  • Stalking: For example, following someone, lying in wait, or giving unwanted gifts
  • Patriarchal violence: When men try to dominate and control women

The Law Is on Your Side

Since 2002, Germany has the Protection Against Violence Act. You can file applications in court
to protect yourself from the perpetrator.

You can request:
  • To use the shared home alone for a time
  • That the perpetrator is prohibited from entering the home
  • That the perpetrator keeps a distance from you
  • That the perpetrator does not call you
  • That the perpetrator does not email you
  • That the perpetrator does not follow or harass you

If the perpetrator does not comply, you can report him to the police. The court will impose a penalty.

The Police Act of North Rhine-Westphalia

In North Rhine-Westphalia, there is the Police Act. The police can protect women better from violence.

You can call the police:
  • If your partner or husband hits you
  • If he insults you
  • If he threatens you
  • If he harasses you

The police can immediately evict the perpetrator from the home for 10 days.

This means:
  • The perpetrator cannot return for 10 days.
  • He cannot contact you for 10 days.

During this time, you can go to court to file applications under the Protection Against Violence Act.

Intersectionality

A person can face multiple forms of discrimination for different reasons.

This might be due to their gender, skin color, social class, a disability, or sexual orientation.

All these aspects of a person are interconnected and influence each other.

This means everyone has their own experiences with discrimination and may face multiple forms of discrimination for different characteristics.

For instance:

  • A Black woman might be treated differently than a white woman because she is both a woman and Black, and these two factors interact.
  • A refugee woman with a disability might face racist discrimination, discrimination for being a woman, and challenges due to her disability (e.g., lack of accessibility in public spaces).

All these factors work together, making the person’s situation more difficult.

Patriarchal Violence

Patriarchal violence affects many areas of the society we live in. Everything considered “female” is subordinated to what is “male.” Men have historically enjoyed and still have many advantages over women, along with more power.

This occurs both at home and in public spaces – for example, at work, in politics, in government agencies, or in social environments.

Violence happens because many people think men are better or more important than women.

This often leads to women doing unpaid caregiving and household work, earning less money, or lacking access to education and school.

Patriarchal violence often aims to ensure that people who do not fit the accepted image of masculinity are oppressed and have less power.

Patriarchal violence also means that men or groups of men use violence to maintain power over women and other genders.

This violence can be physical, verbal, or take the form of control over finances.

Examples include when men:

  • Hit women
  • Harass women
  • Insult, suppress, or treat women unfairly
