About violence

Violence is never right!

Violence against women is a sad part of everyday life.
Unfortunately, violence against women is still part of our society. Women experience violence only because of their gender. If violence occurs at home or in close proximity, this is particularly bad. It usually happens more than once. The violence grows and becomes stronger and stronger. The offender wants to maintain power and control over the woman. He uses many methods to achieve this. For the most part, men are violent against women.

What is violence?
Violence takes various forms. Apart from physical and sexual violence, there is also psychological violence, which includes threats and humiliations. In the case of social violence, for example, contact with friends or family is forbidden. Or the woman is forbidden to work or to have her own account. In this way, the man retains control over the money. There are various forms of violence. We have certainly not mentioned all forms of violence.

Most men blame their wives for the violence. But:
Violence is never right! We support women in situations of violence and help them to free themselves from it. And to move confidently towards a future without couple violence.

If you experience violence, we will provide you with the support you need. At the counselling centre, we also work with interpreters. We understand you! You will receive information and help to change your situation. We will find solutions together in peace and at your own pace.

Violence protection

The law is
on your side.

The Violence Protection Act in Germany
Since 2002, the Violence Protection Act (GewSchG) has been in force in Germany. On the basis of the Violence Protection Act, you can file different applications with the court. In this way, you can be protected from the offender.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Police Act (§ 34 a PolG NRW)
Since the Violence Protection Act, there has also been a new police law. This law enables the police to help you immediately.

If your partner/husband hits, insults, threatens or harasses you, you can call the police. The police will come and can immediately ban the offender from your home for 10 days. He will then not be allowed to come back for 10 days or have any other contact with you. During this time, you can go to court and file an application under the Violence Protection Act. You don’t have to do all this on your own. If you need help with this, give us a call. We will be happy to go to court with you.

If this law does not protect you enough, we will help you find a place that is as safe as possible. We will discuss whether a stay at a women’s refuge is the right option during a personal meeting at our counselling centre.

No matter what decision you come to, we will support you on this difficult path!

Intersectionality

A person can face multiple forms of discrimination for different reasons.

This might be due to their gender, skin color, social class, a disability, or sexual orientation.

All these aspects of a person are interconnected and influence each other.

This means everyone has their own experiences with discrimination and may face multiple forms of discrimination for different characteristics.

For instance:

  • A Black woman might be treated differently than a white woman because she is both a woman and Black, and these two factors interact.
  • A refugee woman with a disability might face racist discrimination, discrimination for being a woman, and challenges due to her disability (e.g., lack of accessibility in public spaces).

All these factors work together, making the person’s situation more difficult.

Patriarchal Violence

Patriarchal violence affects many areas of the society we live in. Everything considered “female” is subordinated to what is “male.” Men have historically enjoyed and still have many advantages over women, along with more power.

This occurs both at home and in public spaces – for example, at work, in politics, in government agencies, or in social environments.

Violence happens because many people think men are better or more important than women.

This often leads to women doing unpaid caregiving and household work, earning less money, or lacking access to education and school.

Patriarchal violence often aims to ensure that people who do not fit the accepted image of masculinity are oppressed and have less power.

Patriarchal violence also means that men or groups of men use violence to maintain power over women and other genders.

This violence can be physical, verbal, or take the form of control over finances.

Examples include when men:

  • Hit women
  • Harass women
  • Insult, suppress, or treat women unfairly
